String theory is one of the leading contenders for a theory of quantum gravity, and the most advanced proposal for a unification of the fundamental forces. At the same time, philosophers have paid relatively little attention to string theory and its metaphysical implications. This two-day workshop brings together philosophers and physicists to explore metaphysical and philosophical questions in string theory broadly understood, i.e. including non-perturbative approaches and issues related to dualities and holography.

The objective of this workshop is to bring experts working on the nature of spacetime and quantum gravity to examine the fate of existing proposals on laws of nature in light of the possible emergence of spacetime in quantum gravity. As these proposals usually rely on spatial and temporal notions, an interesting question is to examine their availability in such a captivating yet thorny environment. The workshop will aim at making progress on this and related topics.
